50's & 60's Key points

  • 13th Amendment

    This abolished Slaverly and involuntary services, unless if it was a type of punishment for crime. This was important because new thing were to come for the blacks and they did not have to be slaves anymore.
  • 14th Amendment

    This Amendment granted citizenship rights and equal protection of laws, this was after the Civil War related to fomer slaves.
  • 15th Amendment

    This prohibited federal and states governements from denying a citizen the right to vote based on the citizens "race, color, or any previous condition of servitude."
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    This happened in New Orleans when Homer Plesset refused to sit in a Jim Crow Car, they took this to court challenging the 13th and 14th amendment.This is important because the laws were requiring racial segregation at the time under the doctrine of "Seperate but not equal"
  • Mendez vs. Westminster

    This took place in Orange County, this case was about Mexican-American Children who couldnt go to Westminster school as like all the other kids just because they were part Mexican, this was important because this changed school ways that made things equal for one another.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas

    This took place in Topeka, Kansas, this was about the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson "Seperate but equal" but this declared "seperate educational facilities are inherently unequal" This was important because it helped break segrgegation and helped the movement of American Civil Rights.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    This was the day Rosa Parks refused to ive up her seat in the bus, she was taken jail because she wasnt in the right place were blacks could sit. This is important because after that the colored people decided to boycott the city busses and started a movement towards the Civil Rights Movement
  • Little Rock Nine

    This was when 9 African American student enrolled into Little Rock Central High School , this was an all white school and it was made into a big scandal because black students were attneding the schools and many whites did not like this.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committe

    This Student Nonviolent comittee took place at shaw University. It was a type of a civil rights movement. This was when students did a sit in to get what they wanted.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968 this was to stop discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing.Colored people were able to finally get their own home with out being descriminated.
  • Birmingham and the March on Washington

    These marches were important because they were peaceful protest that were about the Cvil Rights movement just so that the colored people could get the same rights as well as the whites.
  • " I have a dream"

    The "I have a dream" speech was from Martin Luther King Jr. he made this speech to announce what the blacks should be able to do just as well as the whites do. his was important to many blacks because it promoted the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Birmingham, Alabama

    This was the day a church got bombed, this church was where Martin Luther King Attended as well, there were children attending church stool that day when it happened a memeber of the KKK had done this and was arrested. This is a significant event because it pushed the blacks more into the civil Right Movement
  • Thee Civil Right Workers

    Three workers went missing one of them was black and the other two were white, this was a six federal investigation.These workers worked in registering in black voters in Mississippi, later on they investigated a burned church and then later on found out it was the Ku Klux Klan who murdered them and this all this violence.
  • Voting Rights

    Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, this had made it easier for the blacks to vote, this was important because after many years of not being able to vote this was finally accomplished.
  • Martin Luther King Assassinated

    Martin Luther King Jr. was declared dead this day at age of 39 this man had impacted the counry in many ways for the Civil Rights Movement so that blacks and whites could have equal rights
