    Zimbardo told the guards that they are free to do whatever to maintain law & order within the prison.
  • Suprise Police Arrest for the Students

    The local Palo Alto police department assisted Zimbardo in arresting the 24 students where they were sent to the mock prison from the police station for having been accused for armed robbery blindfolded.
  • Start of experiment

    Philip Zimbardo and his collegues initiated an experiment whether a prison can affect a normal person psychologically. 24 out of 75 students were randomly picked and allocated the role of a prisoner or guard.
  • Consideration of aborting the study

    Zimbardo considered in aborting the study as the guards were not playing their roles as guards well enough. Study is continued notheless for seults.
  • The role for prisoners or guards

    The role for prisoners or guards
    12 of the studens were stirp searched and were given new ID's and prison uniform. They were now called out by their prison number. The other 12 were assigned as guards and were given guard-like unform, covered sunglasses and also wooden batons.
  • Revolt

    Prisoners from Cell 1 revoltied against the guards by locking up their cell using the bed frames and also started to tease the guards.
  • Punishment for revolter

    After several of the guards from other shifts helping to subdue the prisoners, the revolters were punished by being strip searcehd and thrown into 'The Hole' (solitiary confinement)

    Priosner #8612 was the first prisoner to have a mental breakdown and was released just 36 hours of his time in the prison.

    After the revolt of the prisoners, those who were an obedient priosners were given special privileges compared to the other prisoner. those privileges were:
    - Beds
    - Shorter work routines
