Zimbardo's Prison Experiment

  • Day 1; prisoners arrive

    Each prisoner is systematically searched and stripped naked. He was then deloused with a spray, to convey our belief that he may have germs or lice. Prisoners blindfolderd and made fun of by guards. - degradation begins

  • Day 2; rebellion occurs

    Prisoners barricade their cells using beds, led by prisoner 8612. Guards punish 8612 by putting him 'the hole' and punish rest of prisoners. Guards take advantage of their power by waking up prisoners during early hours of morning and insult them. Prisoner 8612 asks to leave and is replaced by prisoner 819.
  • Day 3; more disobediance from prisoners

    Guards wake up to a dismantled prison which is rebuilt in another area. This annoys the guards and so they harass, degrade and humiliate prisoner s even more than before.
  • Day 4; hunger strike of new prisoner 416

    Prisoner 819 refused to take part in the tasks the guards asked him to do. Because of his disobediance, rest of prisoners are punished underminding any solitary amongst prisoners. Prisoner 819 leaves and it is replaced by prisoner 416, who decides to go on a hunger strike.
  • Day 5; prisoners break down

    Prisoner 416 is sent to the hole as a punishment for his hunger strike. Rest of prisoers are also punished because of disobdience of prisoner 416, they are encouraged to take out their anger by banging on the door of 'the hole' and shouting abuse at prisoner 416. On this same day, 4 prisoners broke down and were released. Zimbardos psychologist colleague witnesses the brutallity of experiment and tells Zimbardo what he is doing is wrong.
  • Day 6; experiment ends

    The participants are released as the experiment is no longer continuing.
