Birth
Zachary Taylor was born in Barboursville, Virginia. -
Childhood
Zachary Taylor grew up doing many chores and hard work around the house. He was taught the basis of how to read and write by his mother. From there he self taught himself. He attended grade school, but never went to college. -
Marriage
Zachary Taylor married Peggy Mackall Smith. As a wedding gift, Taylor received 364 acres and hundreds of slaves. He became one of the largest slave holders in Kentucky. -
Fort Harrison
In the war of 1812 Taylor was commanding Fort Harrison. Many of his men became very ill surviving only off green corn.The men were still somehow able to win an attack by 450 Native Americans. -
Saukenuk
Zachary Taylor was going to attack the tribal town of Saukenuk. He was met by many British and Sauk with cannons. It was the only battle he ever lost. -
Peace with Natives
After many battles throughout the years, Taylor made peace with some Native American tribes. He got the Sauk, Fox Menomize and winnebag to stop fighting. They signed a treaty peace and there was no more battles. -
Seminoles
Zachary Taylor was demanded to search for the Seminoles hiding throught Florida. When they battled Taylor lost many of his men but still won the battle. Instaed of killing all the Native Americans, he let them run. This gave hime the nickname "Old Rough and Ready." -
Sickness
Zachary Taylor was still battling the Seminoles. He got many of them to surrender from their guerilla style warfare, but because of how sick he got he had to get transferred. -
Rio Grande
Taylor won major battles in the Mexican-American war at Palo Alto and Rescaco de la Palma. This gave Taylor the command of the army on Rio Grande. Zachary earned much of his fame from this. -
Presidency
Zachary Taylor was very much wanted to run for president by the Whig party. Taylor was not interested, but the party still put him up as their candidate. After getting attention, he eventually got interested and became the 12th president -
Death
On July 4th, 1850 Taylor attended an Independence Day ceremony. While there, he ate many cherries that made him feel very hot and dizzy. He later died on july 9th, 1850.
