Yellow Fever Outbreaks

  • Outbreak French Army

    When: 1802. (Outbreak not necessarily on the 1st of January.) Where: Haitian Revolution What: The disease attacked the French army during the Haitian Revolution. Deaths: More than half of the French army died.
  • Outbreak Panama Canal

    When: 1873. (Outbreak not necessarily on the 1st of January.) Where: Panama Canal. What: Project was stopped because workers started dying of Yellow Fever and Malaria. Deaths: Many workers.
  • Outbreak USA

    When: 1900. (Not 1st of January)
    Where: USA
    What: Army Researchers discover the cause of Yellow Fever. Carlos Finlay came up with the theory that the disease were brought by mosquitoes. Commission member from U.S. Army Jesse Lazear and Henry Rose a surgeon decided to test that theory. After testing on two study volunteers the theory was correct. The two volunteers recovered but Lazear, who was part of the experiment, did not survive.
    Deaths: A few volunteers on further experiments also died.
  • Outbreak USA

    When: 1964. (Outbreak not necessarily on the 1st of January.) Where: USA What: Method to stop and prevent Yellow Fever was developed and spread around the USA. Although sites of breeding were way bigger than the government imagined.
  • Outbreak Brazil

    When: 1970. (Not 1st of January.) Where: Brazil. What: South American countries re-infested. Deaths: A man.
  • Outbreak USA

    When: 1978. (The outbreak was not necessarily on the 1st of January.) Where: USA What: The disease was spread around the Mississippi State. Deaths: Over 5,000 deaths in Memphis alone and 20,000 deaths in the whole of the Mississippi Valley.
  • Outbreak USA

    When: 2002. (Outbreak not necessarily on the 1st of January.) Where: USA What: Texas man dies when comes back from fishing trip in Brazil. No one else in USA had died for two decades before him. Deaths: A man.
