Rape of Nanking
The Imperial Japanese Army brutally killed and raped civilians and soldiers in the city of Nanking. It happened in a 6 week period with hundreds of thousands of deaths and rapes. Nanking was left in ruins and took decades to recover from this event. -
The SS St. Louis
A luxury ship where 900+ Jews fled Germany and hoped to reach Cuba. They were turned away in Havana and were forced to return to Europe where more then 250 were killed by the Nazis. Both Canada and USA refused to take the immigrants. -
Battle of Atlantic
The longest continuous war in WW2 from 1939-1945. A contest between western allies and the axis powers. The war was present at the Atlantic Ocean. Fought for the control of Atlantic sea routes and freedom to project military power across the seas. The Royal Canadian Air Force played a key role in the Allied efforts. -
Operation Barbarossa
After the Battle of Britain the Germans invaded the Soviet Union which was codenamed by Adolf Hitler. A crucial turning point in the war due to the failure of defeat for the Germans against the Soviet Forces. Hitler wanted Soviet resources and Land. The Russians were very unprepared and Germans were also because of the weather and low supply. -
Pearl Harbor
Surprise attack was done against USA on pearl harbor by the Japanese. The Japanese did this because they had thought that USA would interfere with with the planned attacks on southeast Asia. 2,400 USA soldiers were killed and on top of that 1,000 injured. 8 US battle ships and over 300 US planes were destroyed. -
Battle of Hong Kong
Japan invades Hong Kong which the British Crown Colony after having a disagreement to surrendering. The Britain finally surrendered on Christmas Day after Japan took control over many areas around Hong Kong. -
Japanese Canadians internment
Japanese Canadians from British Columbia were forcibly relocated and interned in the name of national security. The majority were Canadians by birth. This event occurred due to the wars by Japan and the controversy. This compromised over 90% of the total Japanese Canadian population. -
Manhattan Project
This project marks the first time an atomic bomb was created. This was a secret project funded by the Government of USA. The goal was to create a atomic bomb before Nazi Germany and use it before they got the chance. Many people were involved and didn't except their work to be used against humans let alone dropped on japan. One big named person that was on the project was Albert Einstein. -
Conscription Crisis
the political and military crisis which brought along a forced military meaning that men were "drafted" into war. This caused an uproar in Canada but, it hadn't been politically damaging. the concription crisis was a call in for the military. They would only call in people in a certain age range. -
D-Day
Allied forces sending over 150,000 soldiers to the Normandy beach to start what is known as D Day. The attack started from the coast gradually pushing the germans into a two front war with the allied forces and Russia. This battle was the turning point of the alllied forces in ww2 and had a huge part in the inevetable surrender of the Germans. -
Liberation of the Netherlands
in the final battles of ww2 Canada was given the task of liberating the Netherlands from Nazi control. Over a year had the Canadians first was attacking from the river banks and ending with the Canadians making the Nazis who has been in occupation of Netherlands for 5 years surrender. over 7,600 Canada soldiers had fallen. For Canada the liberation of Netherlands was a huge win for them also, saving many Dutch lives. -
Death of Hiter
Hitler dies after drinking cyanide and also shooting himself in the head with a Walther PPK 7.65 pistol. The gun was found next to him. what was also next to him was his wife who had committed suicided by drinking cyanide same as Hitler. -
VE-DAY
VE Day or known as Victory in Europe Day is the day where the allies celebrating the end of the reign of Hitler and world war 2. The end of the biggest war had millions of people celebrating in each country. -
Liberation of Concentration Camps
As the soviets advances from the east and the fall of the first concentration camp the Nazis try to demolish the evidence of the camps. On the other side the allied forces mainly Britain and the US move in but, it was the Russians who the biggest help when liberating the concentration camps as they overran Auschwitz which is the Nazis most notorious camp. -
Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
USA dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima caused over 80,000 death initially but, over time the death toll kept rising and rising. the USA dropped the bomb for two reasons to show the power they had and to ultimately make japans emperor surrender. The second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki which killed over 40,000 people. the initial death toll was over 120,000 and it has risen over the years from the radiation.
