  • Anschluss

    Austria is annexed by Germany.
  • Kristallnacht

    Lasts until Nov. 19
    Nazis violently attack Jews and destroy Jewish property, 91 Jews are killed and others are beaten.
  • Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact

    Germany and the Soviet Union pledged neutrality should either become involved in a war. It also divided up Eastern Europe between the two powers. It was dissolved when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in June, 1941.
  • Poland invasion

    Poland invasion
    Germany invades Poland from the west.
  • War is declared

    Britain declares war on Germany at 11 am, France declares war on Germany six hours later.
  • U.S neutrality

    The United States declares its neutrality.
  • Repeal Neutrality acts

    FDR calls for a special session of Congress to repeal the Neutrality Acts. He argues the United States could preserve neutrality and provide Great Britian and France with arms by adopting a cash and carry plan.

    Soviet Union and Germany divide Poland.

    Albert Einstein and others inform FDR of the possibility of creating an atomic bomb.

    German troops invade Denmark and Norway.
  • Italy

    Italy declares war on Britain and France.

    FDR elected to an unprecedented third term as president.
  • Atlantic Charter

    Churchill and FDR form Atlantic Charter, establishing the war aims of both nations.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Britain declares war on Finland, Hungary, and Rumania. Japanese bomb the United States fleet at Pearl Harbor.
  • War on Japan

    Britain and the United States declare war on Japan. Japan invades Malaya.
  • War on U.S

    Germany and Italy declare war on United States.
  • Internment camps

    By order of FDR, Japanese-Americans living on the West Coast are transferred to internment camps in the interior of the country.
  • Bataan

    Japan captures Bataan. By June, Japan also controls the Philippines.
  • Battle of Guadalcanal

    Battle of Guadalcanal, heavy losses on both sides, eventual United States victory.
  • Italy surrenders

    Italy surrenders.
  • D-Day

    Allied forces landed in Normandy, France to begin a massive offensive against the Germans in the occupied territory of Europe.

    Battle of the Bulge, the last German offensive in the west.
  • Hitler suicide

    Hitler commits suicide.
  • V-E Day

    Germany and Italy officially and unconditionally surrender to the Allied forces.
  • Hiroshima

    Hiroshima
    Atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima
  • Nagasaki

    Atomic bomb is dropped on Nagasaki
  • VJ day

    Japan surrenders, NOT unconditionally to the Allied Powers.
