This happened because the Germans were trying to gain as much land and power as possible. What happened was as France was invaded, they were told to hold out as long as possible because there was word that America would come to help them. Germany eventually captured Paris and Canadian troops came through giving some hope to those trapped in Paris.

After Germany's win over Paris, they were looking for a new target which turned out to be Britain. They started the bombings on Britain on July 10, 1940, which marked the beginning of the Battle of Britain. Germany had Britain outnumbered in terms of soldiers, but Britain had a few advantages, such as better planes and because Germany had come into this war with little knowledge and intelligence. In the end Britain came out with the win, which marked one of Hitler's first defeats.
