  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Attack on Pearl Harbor

    *Happened in Honolulu Hawaii, on a Sunday morning right before 8 am.
    *Surprise attack by Japanese forces
    *Japanese fighter planes descended on the base and managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, and eight battleships.
    *2,400 Americans died in the attack, and 1,000 people were wounded.
    *U.S. wasn’t happy with Japan before this attack.
    *Puts the U.S. into the war

    *Put an end to policies aimed at encouraging or enforcing Jews to leave the german reich and other parts of Europe.
    *The policies were replaced by systematic annihilation.
    *It’s unclear when Hitler decided to murder Europe Jew’s it was probably made sometime in 1941
    *Nazi leaders envisioned killing 11 million Jews and succeeded in killing 6 million.

    *U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island of Luzon to the Japanese.
    *75,000 Filipino and American troops were forced to walk 65 miles to prison camps.
    * The marchers made the long trek in intense heat and were treated horribly by Japanese soldiers.
    *Thousands died while on this march.
    *The reason the U.S. General Edward king Jr. surrendered this land was because of starvation and disease.

    Operation Overlord/ D-Day

    *Resulted in Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control.
    *156,000 American, British, and Canadian soldiers landed on five beaches along a 50 mile stretch of a heavily fortified France’s Normandy region.
    * One of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required a lot of planning.
    *A large deception was created to mislead the Germans.
    * Called the beginning of the end of the war in Europe.

    *Many soldiers and civilians died in widespread house to house fighting.
    * The soviet union started the final offenses on Germany’s capital Berlin.
    *Took them four days to get through the Seelow Heights.
    *The outcome of this battle was the end of Nazi Germany and the leadership of them.

    Hiroshima/Nagasaki

    *An American B-29 bomber dropped the worlds first deployed atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima
    *Immediately 80,000 people would die, and then later on tens of thousands would die from radiation exposure
    *A second atomic bomb would be dropped on Nagasaki three days later killing around 40,000 people.
    *from this the emperor of Japan announced the surrender of the country in WWII.
    *The Manhattan project created the first atomic bomb
