  • Battle of Britain

    Great Britain was the only major power in Western Europe that hadn't been conquered by Germany. The Battle of Britain was fought in the air for the full three months. German planes would fly in from France to bomb military and later civilian targets and be intercepted by British planes. Raids would come in day and night, hitting London along with many other places.
  • Invasion of the Soviet Union

    code name: Operation Barbarossa.
    Nazi Germany launched a surprise attack against the Soviet Union, its ally in the war against Poland. Soon after the invasion, mobile killing units began the mass murder of Soviet Jews. German military and civilian occupation policies led to the deaths of MILLIONS of Soviet prisoners of war and Soviet civilians.
  • Pearl Harbor

    The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, this lead to the U.S entry into WWII. All 8 U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad, Russia. It stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the tide of war in favor of the Allies. Hitler’s goal was to eliminate Soviet forces in the south, secure the region’s economic resources.
  • Battle of the Philippine sea

    The last great carrier battle of WWII, the Battle of the Philippine Sea happened as U.S. forces advanced across the Pacific. A Japanese force including five large fleet carriers and four light carriers. This disparity led to the action being nicknamed "the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot," with about four times as many Japanese planes downed as American.
  • Battle of Leyte Gulf

    The largest naval battle in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf off the Philippines was another step in the U.S. advance toward the Japanese home islands. All available Japanese forces were thrown into the area but the separate units failed to unite, resulting in several actions scattered over a wide area. All four Japanese light carriers were sunk, as were three battleships.
