  • Invasion of Poland

    At 4.45 am on 1 September 1939 the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish garrison in what was to become the first military engagement of World War Two. At the same time, 62 German divisions supported by 1,300 aircraft commenced the invasion of Poland. This manoeuvre is called Blitzkrieg. The decision of Adolf Hitler to invade Poland was a gamble. The German Army was not yet at full strength and the German economy was still locked into peacetime production.

  • Battle of the Atlantic

    The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, running from 1939 to the defeat of Germany in 1945. At its core was the Allied naval blockade of Germany, announced the day after the declaration of war, and Germany's subsequent counter-blockade. It was at its height from mid-1940 through to the end of 1943.     In 1939 Hitler broke the Treaty of Verseailles by entering German troops into the RhineLand. Germany invaded Czechoslavakia, Germany allied with Austria and invaded Poland.

    The Battle of Dunkirk was an important battle in the Second World War between the Allies and Germany. As part of the Battle of France on the Western Front, the Battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe from 26 May to 4 June 1940.

    Mussolini wanted to re-build the Roman Empire, this caused a probalem because Parts of Africa were owned by Britain. Mussolini Invanded egypt which was part of the British empire, this left the Itaian army weak. Hitler sent a German General into eygypt to help Mussonlini get back land. British troops invaded Etheopia, this then meant the Italians were forced to surrender.

    Battle of Britain

    The Battle of Britain was the German air force's attempt to gain air superiority over the RAF from July to September 1940. Their ultimate failure was one of the turning points of World War Two and prevented Germany from invading Britain.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. Beginning on 22 June 1941, over 4 million soldiers of the Axis powers invaded the USSR along a 2,900 km front, the largest invasion in the history of warfare. In addition to troops, Barbarossa used 600,000 motor vehicles and 750,000 horses. The ambitious operation was driven by Adolf Hitler's desire to conquer the Soviet territories.

    France was conquered and ruled by Germany June 1940, It stayed that way for 4 years. Germany built an atlantic wall to stop an allied invasion, it's defence was gun batteries, observasion posts, bunkers and radar towers. Britain created fake armies, this was called Operation Fortitude, Britain dropped 200K tons of bombs this damaged Germanys ability to reinforce the beaches. D-day was delayed because of bad weather on the channel, 5-6th June,75,000 British and Canadian troops landed in France.
  • The dropping of the Atomic Bomb

    On August 6, 1945, the United States used a massive, atomic weapon against Hiroshima, Japan. This atomic bomb, the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT, flattened the city, killing tens of thousands of civilians. While Japan was still trying to comprehend this devastation three days later, the United States struck again, this time, on Nagasaki.
