    The United States agreed to participate after debating whether to support Olympic games hosted by the Nazis. Jesse Owens became the hero of the Olympics by winning four gold medals and breaking several world records. Many American journalists hailed the victories of these African American athletes. Germans were embarrassed.

  • Hitler Forced Austria to Unite with Germany

    Hitler claimed that all members of the German race belonged to one country. Powerful German troops marched into Austria to confirm the unification with Germany. They did this all for the Third Reich.

  • Night of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht)

    Violence aimed specifically at the Jews. This broke out in the streets, and Nazi mobs destroyed thousands of Jewish businesses and homes. The name came from the shattered glass from the store windows that littered the streets. The morning after, thousands of German Jewish men were arrested for their “crime” of being Jewish and were sent to concentration camps.

    The Nazis defeated France and completely took over. Therefore, Britain was the only Western power still free from Hitler’s reign. At the same time, German conquered a couple more countries.

  • Unites States Issued Japan a Stern Ultimatum

    Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Harry S. Truman met up at Potsdam to ultimatum Japan. This meaning Japan either surrenders themselves or be destroyed. When Japan suddenly refused, the United States carried out its threat.

  • U.S Drops a Second Atomic Bomb

    Three days after the U.S dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, they drop a second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki. This, killing over 70,000 people, and the same amount injured. Because of this second attack, Japan was forced to sue for peace.

    Five days after America drops the second atomic bomb, Japan surrenders. They announced that if it would end the fighting, they would do it. And they did. This leading to the end of World War II.
