    this was the day ww2 officially started. Germany invaded Poland on this day. The invasion of Poland lasted from 9/01/1939-10/06/1939. The allies ended being victorious after many battles were fought.

    Battle of Dunkirk

    The battle of Dunkirk involved the rescuing of more then 338,000 British and French soldiers from the port of Dunkirk. 3,500 British died. Dunkirk was considered a failure/ fallout for the germans because they let that many people escape, yet the Germans still ran victorious from this battle. Most POW's that were left stranded there ended up being mass executed. Lower office moral would later be sent to salt mines.

    On this day, the Japanese military struck a surprise attack on the Hawaii naval base. 2,403 Americans were killed during this battle. This attack is what led to the US joining the war. Japanese planes flew through the naval base shooting bullets and bombs, destroying almost everything. the Japanese rose victorious from this attack.

    Operation Torch

    Operation Torch was an invasion of French North Africa. This was a result between the uneasy compromise from the Western Allies. The purpose of this was to ease pressure on the soviet union. This battle took place in Morocco Algeria. As a result of Operation Torch, Operation Anton was ordered by Hitler. Operation Torch resulted in an allied victory.

    Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima was initially targeted as the "island hopping" strategy for the Americans. It was a five week process to capture this island. This battle was considered one of the bloodiest ones within ww2. It is believed that all but 200 of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers were KIA, and 7,000 marines as well. 12,000 Japs are considered MIA/ KIA along with 218 Americans as well. Dozens of bodies are still being recovered each year.

    Battle of Berlin

    The battle of Berlin was among the Germans and the Soviets. This battle was seen to be because Stalins mistrust of the west. It was designated as the Berlin strategic offense operation, which was later to be dubbed the fall of berlin. Following the fault of the Germans in the battle, Hitler commited suicide.

    Hiroshima/ Nagasaki

    The bombings included the US and Japan. Two atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Between 129,000-226,000 people were killed. These bombs were dropped in hopes to end the war with japan. many of the people who were alive afterwards suffered extreme radiation sickness and injuries. Shortly after this, Japan admitted defeat and ended the war. The US won this.
