This was a surprise attack from Japanese Air Forces towards the U.S in attempt to stop them from interfering their planned military actions towards The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the United States. Japan saw this attack as a success as they had sunk 8 ships and damaged 18, causing thousands of crew members dying. Japan also destroyed 180 planes and damaged 128 damaged. -

Then on Aug 9th 1945 the U.S dropped a second bomb on the city of Nagasaki destroying the city and the people in it. They bombs had parachutes on them to slow the fall and give time for the planes to get to a safe distance.
