  • Germany Invades Poland

Aolf Hitler invades Poland in an attempt to rule Poland. The invasion was from air and land. Their strategy was to pre-bomb the Polish defences and communication before following up on land and setting up "security" forces. The Polish army made the foolish mistake to try to attack the Germans while they were severly under-equipped. Concentration camps were soon set up all over the country. Germany was bombed by Great Britain just three days later. Source: http://www.history.com/this-day-in-histo

Japanese fighter planes launched an attack on the Naval base in Hawaii. During the two hours that the attack lasted, almost 20 vessels and over 300 planes were destroyed and over 3000 men died. Germany soon takes sides with Japan and Italy declares war on the US as well.
  • Wannsee Conference

This was the day that Germany discussed the "Final Solution" to the Jews in Europe. Hitler and higher ranked Nazi officials were present to this meeting. Many different ways to get rid of Jews were discussed. The idea to transport all the Jews to concentration camps and slave them until they died was also brought up. Some people thought it was too much of a hassle, so the use of "gas vans" became a popular way of killing mass amount of Jews at a time. Source: http://www.history.com/this-day-in-h

  • D Day (Normandy Invasion)

Allies dropped off over 150,000 men near France in one of the biggest amphibious attacks in history. We had the element of surprise because we fed them false information about the goals of the attack. We fought Germany and made it into France. By August we had a lot of France under our control and Germany was defeated. This was considered the beginning of the end of war in Europe.
  • Battle of Iwo Jima

This was a historic amphibious attack on a Japanese base. Only three divisions of Americans marines wiped out 23000 Japanese soldiers that were protecting the base in about a month. This battle is what the famous picture of an American flag being raised came from.
  • Battle of Okinawa

The Japanese started setting up defence lines in water in order to protect Okinawa. They then sent out kamikaze planes and attacked the Allies. Both sides lost many soldiers as well as both generals. This battle was described as "a scene from hell".
  • VE Day

VE Day stands for victory in Europe. This day was celebrated by the Allies because it's the day that German soldiers surrendered. Even though they surrendered, they quickly fled. Germans feared that the soldiers would be taken as prisoners.
  • Dropping of the Atomic Bombs

An American bomber plane dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This was an attempt to get Japan to surrender and end WW2. Over 80000 were immediately killed and many more from radiation will die. After this, Japan still didn't surrender, so we dropped another atom bomb in another Japanese city called Nagasaki. Japan's emperor surrendered on August 15, to avoid any of his other cities getting bombed.
