    Battle of the Atlantic
    The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, running from 1939 to the defeat of Germany in 1945. The Battle of the Atlantic pitted U-boats and other warships of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) and aircraft of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) against Allied merchant shipping. The convoys were escorted by British and Canadian navy and airforce. They were also aided by the U.S. airforce and navy.

    North African Front
    In 1940,the Italians invaded Egypt from Libya,however their biggest mistake was that they stopped at Sidi Barrini.The British commander,General Richard O'Connor seized the opportunity to launch a major offensive against the Italians.They were outnumbered by 3 to 1,however due to their training and the use of updated weapons and tatics,the British 8th Army were able to push the Italians out of Egypt,into Libya and stopped at Mersa Mertruh.

    Battle of Stalingrad
    The German offensive to capture Stalingrad commenced in late summer 1942, supported by intensive Luftwaffe bombing which reduced much of the city to rubble. The German offensive eventually bogged down in house-to-house fighting and despite controlling over 90% of the city at times, the Wehrmacht was unable to dislodge the last Soviet defenders clinging tenaciously to the west bank of the Volga River.

    The Allies planned an Anglo-American invasion of northwestern Africa. With much of North West Africa already under Allied control, this would allow the Allies to carry out a pincer operation against Axis forces in North Africa.The Allies planned three task forces, amphibious landings, to seize the key ports and airports of Morocco and Algeria simultaneously, targeting Casablanca, Oran and Algiers. Successful completion of these operations was to be followed by an advance eastwards into Tunisia.

    The Allied invasion of Italy was the Allied landing on mainland Italy on September 3, 1943, by General Harold Alexander's 15th Army Group (comprising Mark Clark's U.S. Fifth Army and Bernard Montgomery's British Eighth Army) during the Second World War. The operation followed the successful invasion of Sicily during the Italian Campaign. The main invasion force landed around Salerno on the western coast in Operation Avalanche, while two supporting operations took place in Calabria and Taranto.

    The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War. The battle resulted in the highest number of casualties in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Japan lost over 100,000 troops killed or captured, and the Allies suffered more than 50,000 casualties of all kinds. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused Japan to surrender just weeks after the end of the fighting at Okinawa.
