    US marines stormed the land and captured the island. There was only abut 23000 Japanese troops and soldiers that fought with very elobrate plans and they fought throught caves. After a month of fighting the Americans cleared and wipedout all defending troops. Then they raised and American flag. The Japenese were all wiped out and American losses included 5,900 dead and 17,400 wounded.
