Italy entered the war on this day, siding with the Axis powers as the defeat of France became apparent. And after the defeat of France, Hitler declared that Nazi Germany would attack the soviet union the following spring. The had joined as an ally of Germany.

After 4 years of being under Nazi occupation, on this day Paris was liberated by the French 2nd Armoured Division and the US 4th Infantry Division. The German general at that time defied Hitler's orders to demolish Paris, and instead signed a formal surrender that afternoon.
