On August 6, 1945, an American bomber dropped the world's first deployed atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. The explosion killed about ninety percent of the city's population. Three days later a second American atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. On August 15, Japan's Emperor announced his country's surrender.
