    Battle of the Coral Sea

    Japan was taking over the Pacific and winning every battle prior to this battle until May 1942 when U.s and Austrailia stopped Japan from invading. The Allies did manage to stop Japan from invading for the first time but Japan won the actual battle. U.s was beginning to use the Island Hopping technique to weaken Japan's forces.

    Battle of Midway

    U.S were victorious in the battle of the Midway which was when U.S launched a surprise attack on Japan at Pacific Island called Midway. Admiral Chester Nimitz intercepted Japanese code. The Japanese lost a lot: 4 carriers, heavy cruiser, 3 destroyers, at least 4,800 men, some 275 planes, and heavy damage to remaining vessels of their fleet. U.S losses were significantly smaller: 1 carrier, the Yorktown, 1 destroyer, 150 planes and 307 men.

    Hitler hoped to capture Soviet oil fields while Germans violated nonaggression pact with Soviet Union and attacked. Germans almost won, they controlled 9/10 of the city and the winter of 1943 hit. Was the turning point in WW2.

    Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and George Patton influential in leading attack and Soviet Union was pushing into Poland while Allies were pushing North in Italy. 150,000 Allied troops invaded.

    The Liberation of Paris which is also known as the Battle for Paris, was a military action that was during World War II from August 19th 1944 until the German garrison surrendered the French capital on August 25 1944.

    Battle of the Bulge

    Was a very brutal war, 120 American GIs captured and mowed down by SS machine guns and pistols. Fought in Belgium- Germany was trying to capture Antwerp and German tanks broke through American lines. 80,000 Americans died while 120,000 Germans died. Ameicans almost lost but didn't.

    This island in the Pacific was critical for U.S win which they did in fact win. 27,000 Japanese-held Iwo Jima. 6,000 U.S marines died while 26,800 Japanese troops died.

    Battle of Okinawa

    Japan used 1,900 kamikaze attacks and this was Japans's last defensive stronghold. U.S won and 110,000 Japanese troops died while 7,600-12,500 U.S troops died.
  • April 12, 1945

    Franklin D. Roosevelt passes away at the beginning of his fourth term and the U.S went through a significant grieving period. Harry S. Truman, as vice president, takes over the role as president.
  • The end of Hitler

    On April 30th, Hitler shoots himself while Eva Braun takes cyanide, resulting in them both committing suicide. Their bodies were burned and this was on the cover page of time magazine on May 7th, 1945.

    V-E day = Victory in Europe day, 1st part of War was over and General Eisenhower accepted a surrender by the Third Reich

    Potsdam Conference

    The chief participants were U.S. President Harry S. Truman, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (or Clement Attlee, who became prime minister during the conference), and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. They drew up a blueprint to disarm Germany and abolish the nazi regime. Divided Germany into four sections and Japan must "unconditionally surrender".

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Continuing with the Manhatten Project and their nuclear weapons, the United States dropped nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945. Hiroshima, "little boy": in 43 seconds, the city collapsed to dust. Nagasaki "Fat Man": leaveled half the city.

    International tribunal court tried nazi officials. Over 23 nations, tried Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg, Germany resulting in 12 prominent nazis being sentenced to death and 200 other officials were given lesser sentences despite being found guilty.
  • Manhattan Project

    The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapon. 200,000 Japanese died due to the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Manhatten project was completed on December 31, 1946.
