  • Rise of the Fascist Dictators in Europe

    Benito Mussolini took power over Italy, Adolf Hitler took power over Germany and Francisco Franco took over Spain.

    Japanese aggression in asia

    Japan took over areas in Asia, parts of Russia and China. Japan killed civilians. They ended up with more land in southeast Asia.
  • Annexation of Austria

    Hitler forced Austria to appoint Nazis to key cabinet posts. When the Austrian leader would oppose, Nazis were sent to "preserve order"
  • Nazi-Soviet Pact

    Hitler created a pact with his enemy Joseph Stalin for nonaggression. The pact forced them to be peaceful with one another. They secrestly agreed not to fight against each other in war and to share parts of Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe.
  • Munich Conference

    Britain and France gave into an agressor to keep the peace. It was Hitler's commands that made Czech surrender to Sudetenland. Hitler proceeded to say he wasn't going to expand territory.
  • Phony War

    During the first winter, the French settle down behind the Maginot Line. British troops were sent to wait with them. Then Hitler launched a blizkrieg agains Norway and Denmark, defeating them, then attacked Netherlands and Belgium.
  • Fall of France

    The German invasion on France, defeated most of the French forces. Later in June an armistice was signed which resulted in a division of France.
  • Miracle at Dunkirk

    German forces attacked Trance and sent British forces towards the English channel. Soldiers boarded naval vessels, merchant ships and fishing ships back to England. This saved almost 300,000 lives.

    Battle of Britain

    Hilterr launched his attack called Operation Sea Lion on Britain citizens. In the middle of August, Germans bombed England's southern coast. This bombing lasted 57 nights.
  • Nazis Defeated

    They were basically defeated by bad decisions mad by Hitler and the advantage in numbers the British, American and Russian troops had on them.

    Nazi Genocide

    Nazis delibratly murdered European Jews. The "radically inferior" were forced into concentration camps. Jews were sent to death camps. Young, old and ill were killed imediatly while the others were worked to death or experimentd on.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    3 million Germans attracked the Soviet Union. Tey caught Stalin unprepared. This killed 2,500,000 soldiers trying to protect their home. But the Soviet Unions counterattack was their harsh winter which froze thousands of Germans soldiers to death.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Japenese airplanes destoyed 19 ships and crushed planes. This attack also killed more than 2,400 people. This was a surprise attack no one saw coming.
  • Battle of El Alemein

    General Bernard Montgomary stopped Rommel's advances. Driving Anis powers back across Libya into Tunisia.
  • United Nations

    This was when 26 representatives pledged there government to fight against their enemies. The name was created by FDR and used in the declaration of the United States.

    Battle of Stalingrad

    This battle was the costliest battle of the war. Germans surrounded Stalin's namesake city. Winter came and took around 15,000 lives, but in total 300,000 people were killed.
  • Period: to

    Battle of Midway

    U.S. warships and airplanes greatly damaged two fleets of Japanese war ships. This severly weakened their naval power. After this battle the U.S. took the offensive.
  • Battle of the Atlantic

    A battle in which American and British troops fought against German submaries. Germans sunk more than 360 cargo ships. At night the American Government ordered a full balckout to save our ships.
  • Invasion of Italy

    The victory in North Africa opened a front in Italy for the allies. They defeated Italian forces in about a month. Italians overthrew Mussolini and signed an armistice to stop fighting. Hitler sent troops to make sure that they would not fight against him.
  • D-Day

    The allies took this day to invade France. Airplanes dropped paratroopers behind enemy lines. 176,000 allied troops arrived on the shore avoiding underwater mines and raking medicine (gun fire).
  • Battle of Okinawa

    This was the largest amphibious landing in WWII. It resulted in over 100,000 casualties it was an 80 day long battle described as "typhoon of steel".
  • Battle of Berlin

    After soviet forces were in Poland and Germany they planned to go to Berlin, Towards the end of theis war Adolf Hitler committed suicide.
  • Use of Atomic Weapons

    An American plane dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. This bomb instantly killed more than 70,000 people. The second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki (August 9th 1945). This killed more than 40,000 people.
  • Surrender of Japan

    Japan surrendered ending World War II. End of June America took over the Japanese island of Okinawaw. U.S. allies were then able to invade the Japenese home islands.
