From this battle, 2,403 Americans were killed and over 1,000 Americans are wounded. After 27 hours , America declares war on Japan.

    The island of Iwo Jima was essential to the United States for it was a base of bombers reaching Japan. 20,700 Japanese soldiers defended the island. The battle resulted in more than 6,000 marines dead and about 200 Japanese left alive.
