On December 7th, 1941, Japan did an aerial strike against Pearl Harbor Navy base near Honolulu, Hawaii. Over 2,400 Americans died in the attack. Some ships sank with men still stuck inside. This event caused President Roosevelt to ask congress to declare war on Japan. Link text
