The 1932 election in Germany gave the Nazi Party a great win. As a result of the loss and depression from WWI, people of Germany wanted a strong government. The Nazi's pledged to restore German cultural values, put Germans back to work, and restore Germany as a world power. The people really liked what was going to happen. Although the people of Germany at the time saw this as a good thing, this event is important because it set up the beginning of the Nazi take over and lead to WWII. -
After the Munich Pact was signed in September 1938, in which Germany said they would not take all of Czechoslovakia when they took a little. In February 1939 Hitler took the rest of Czechoslovakia and later sent tanks and his air force (Luftwaffe) into Poland, Britain and France declare war on Germany. This event is important because after getting out of a depression both countries are at war now and starts WWII. -
On December 7, 1941 Japan's Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto advised for a strike on Pearl Harbor, Honolulu Hawaii. Japan wanted to knock out the United States Pacific Fleet to make it weaker. There were over 3,400 casualties, 2,300 deaths, 19 ships, and 188 planes destroyed. This event is important because it lead to the US on December 8th declaring war against Japan and Japan attacking British and US territories like Malaya and Guam. Until we dropped two bombs in order for Japan to surrender. -
On December 8th, after the event on Pearl Harbor, the US declares war on Japan. All but one person, Janet Rankin, agreed to go to war. This event is important because it was the US entering WWII in which over 15 million men served with almost 700,000 deaths. It lead to Revenue Acts, modern income tax, WAC/WAVES, women "doing men jobs while they were gone", All-American Girls Pro. Baseball League, and so much more. -
After Pearl Harbor, to avoid any other dangers from Japan FDR signed Executive Order 9066. This order forced Japanese into "internment camps", some 120,000 were held for up to four years. They had to be questioned to see which part of the camp they would reside in, only given 48 hours notice. This event is important because the US canceled out any dangers that could have happened from Japanese living in America. Also, it showed how quickly the US was able to work together to protect America. -
On June 6, 1944 allied troops were ordered to storm the beaches of Normandy nicknamed Omaha,Gold,Juno,Sword, and Utah by Dwight D. Eisenhower. 175,000 allied forces came ashore, 4,000 were wounded/killed. This event is important because it started to end Germany's occupation in France. It lead to Paris being liberated from Germany's control on August 15,1944, later Luxembourg, Belgium, and the rest of France were under allied control. Hitler started to lose the war, slowly but surely. -
On April 30, 1945 Hitler committed suicide with his then wife Eva Braun in his bunker. He did so by taking a cyanide capsule and then shooting himself in the head. Hitler knew that his power was decreasing and wanted to not be caught by the allies. This event is important because it lead to Germany unconditionally surrendering to the allied powers. On August 6, 1945 the war was coming to an end, but Japan would not surrender. In Alamogordo, New Mexico scientist Oppenheimer tested the first successful atomic bomb. There were many options they could have taken such as dropping the bomb, wait for Soviets to join, negotiate, and more. The US decided to drop a bomb off Enola Gay nicknamed "little boy" on the city of Hiroshima, 200,000 deaths. This event is important because Japan did not surrender which lead to the bombing of Nagasaki. -
After the bombing on Hiroshima did not make Japan surrender, the US dropped another bomb on the city of Nagasaki three days later. An atomic bomb nicknamed "fat man" was dropped off Bockscar on August 9th. Unlike Hiroshima, there were less deaths, 70,000, but still mass destruction. This is important because it lead to Japan surrendering to the US and was an advancement in atomic warfare -
Japan surrendered to the US after the bomb droppings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The US made them sign the treaty on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. On April 28, 1952 the war and occupation of Japan was officially over. This event is important because it ended WWII and many other deaths were prevented as a result of the surrendering.
