The invasion was a failure on Adolf Hitler's part, despite sending over 4 million soldiers. The Soviets held their own, keeping Germany from taking Moscow. The Germans could no longer hold an offensive attack in the Soviet Union for the duration of the war, resulting in the Soviets winning the battle.

It was fought by aircraft launched from aircraft carriers. Four Japanese fleet carriers were lost along with their crew. The U.S. lost the carrier Yorktown. In the end, the Japanese had to turn back their fleets after losing important air superiority.
