World War II Started
Germany, Italy, and Japan (the Axis Powers) and Britain, France, and China ( the Allies) went to war against one another. Worldwide depression was a cause for that. The problems that were not solved in World War I led to these alliences. -
German Troops Invaded Russia
Four million troops poured over the Russian border. Within a few months, over two and a half million Russians were either killed, captured, or badly injured. German soldiers made huge advances in Russia- advancing in Moscow, Leningrad, and Stalingrad. -
The U.S. joins the Allies in the war
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US declared war on Japan. Germany allied with Japan and declared war on the US. The US responded by declaring war on Germany on December 11, 1941. -
D-Day
General Dwight Eisenhower led an invasion of Allied trrops into Norway, France. This army fought their way through France and Belgim and finally into Germany while Russian troops fought them from the east. -
Adolf Hitler's death
Hitler commited suicide when the Battle of Berlin radged above him. He realized that all was lost and thet the Axis' will loose the war. So the German dictator and his "mistress" Eva Braun commited suicide in their Führerbunker. -
Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Japanese fought on even after the war in Europe ended. Truman decided to use the newly developed atomic bomb to end the war quickly and prevent more U.S. casualties. The Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, killing about 78,000 people and injuring 100,000 more. -
The Japenese surrender
The morning of September 2, 1945, after two weeks of accepting the Allies terms, Japan formally surrenderd. The ceremony took place on the USS Missouri, anchored with other United States' and British ships in Tokyo Bay.
