On this day German bombers attacked over the English channel and on September, what became known as the "London blitz," occurred. German bombers switched its attacks to London. On September 17 Hitler postponed the attacks indefinently seeing it too difficult to attain power over England.

This was the invasion tactic the Germans used to attack the Soviet Union and it almost brought them victory. However, Hitler delayed their advance in August to decide strategy and by the time he was ready to return to the offensive near Moscow his army had been devastated by the winter.

The Japanese launched an air attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the chief American naval base in the Pacific. This took the Americans by surprise and destroyed much of their fleet and many airplanes.
