    It was a battle between the US and Japanese navies. The US won. It was a turning point in the Pacific war because US planes destroyed three Japanese aircraft carriers. From that point on, the US had the upper hand in the Pacific.

    he Allies fought the Axis powers. The allies won. It marked a turning point for the Allies in the western dessert campaign, stopping the Axis from gaining control of the Suez Canal and the middle east oil fields.
  • Battle of Stalingrd

    The Geramns and Russians fought. Russians won. Mid-November of 1942, a surprise pincer attack by two Russian armies cut off the Gerrnan Sixth Arrny, which was then locked in a struggle for the city of Stalingrad. Trapped in a Kessel, or cauldron, an egg-shaped line of defense thirty miles wide and twenty miles deep, the Sixth Army, which was the command of General Friedrich Paulus, was ordered by Hitler to hold its ground rather than retreat west to join the vanguard of the German forces.
  • D-Day

    Battle between Allies and Russians. Allies won. The Allied invasion of Northern Europe on June 6th, 1944, opened up a second front that forced Hitler to send forces west, which took pressure off the Russians.
  • Iwo Jima

    Faught between the US and Japanese. US won. The island was occupied by Japan and the US wanted it as an air-base from which to launch air-raids against Japan. It was a bloody battle with high casulties on both sides.
  • Okinawa

    Battle between the US and Japan.US won. It was a heavy battle with high casulties on both sides. Japan used kamikaze attacks against US warships in an effort to force the US to retreat. Kamikaze attacks involved Japanese pilots crashing their planes into ships; they were suicide missions.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    America and Germany fought. Allied won. The Allied forces were advancing towards Germany, pushing the Germans back town by town and believing the war to be almost won. But this was Hitler’s last attempt to stop the momentum. His aim was to advance through the wooded area of the Ardennes in Luxembourg and Belgium and cut the Allied armies in two and then push on towards the port of Antwerp, a vital Allied stronghold.
