    The triple entente is an alliance between Britain, France and Russia/ By joining the entente they promised to provide military support to the other countries of it was needed. A lot of other countries were roped into the alliance such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

    The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand, archduke of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated, as well as his wife, Sophie. He was shot to death by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

    The Schlieffen plan was thought of by General Count Alfred Von Schleiffen in December 1905. The attack was designated for France. This caused Britain to declare war on Germany even though the plan was unsuccessful.

    The first battle of the Somme occured close to the river and was one of the most costly attempts to break the stalemate in the trenches. The allied forces tried to push Germany's barriers back, which they succeeded in, pushing them 8 kilometres. There were thousands of casualties.

    The ANZAC were assigned the task of capturing Poziere's village which they were successful in doing for a time. They were surrounded by German troops and there was an approximate 5285 casualties. They tried to gain the advantage by taking hold of a nearby farm but were unsuccessful.

    In France, Belgium, Russia, Italy, Turkey and Britain conscription was already used. Australia had a vote (a plebiscite) for conscription which was defeated. They had a seconed plebiscite the next year which was, again, overruled.

    Australian and American troops began the attack and by using massive amounts artillerary etc. they succeeded to break through at Bellicourt. Other troops attacked the canal. With lots of casualties, they managed to break the Hindenburg line.

    The head of German delegation, Matthais Erzberger, signed the armistice (ceasefire) on the 11th. The terms were written by French Marshal Ferdinand Foch. It required all battles to be ended by the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and was only meant to last 30 days initially.
