    The Battle of Tannenberg was a fight between the Russian Empire and the German Empire in the first days of World War I. It was fought by the Russian First and Second Armies against the German Eighth Army between 26 August and 30 August 1914. The battle resulted in the almost complete destruction of the Russian Second Army.182,000 total casualties. WOW!

It was directly triggered by the asassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinande and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip.The Countrys that were in WW1 consisted of the Central Powers- Germany,Austria-Hungary,Ottoman&Bulgaria and the Allies- Great Britain,France,Russia, Italy & US.World War One was mainly trench warfare.Both sides would have front line trenches and the most casualties took place inside the trench.

    The second battle began on Apr. 22, 1915, when the Germans, using poison gas for the first time in the war, launched another massive assault on the soldiers at Ypres. The attack was unsuccessful and was broken off. A second gas attack, against a Canadian division, on April 24, pushed the Allies further back, and, by May, they had retreated to the town of Ypres, there trenches were then bombarded (picture to the left) but the Germans did not take advantge. The battle of Ypres ended at May 25.

    The battle began on May 31st, 1916. The countries that were involved during this battle were Britain and Germany. The battle took place off the coast of Britain. The battle was fought because the German's Fleet Commander had returned the policy of making sorties against the British coast. The battle started when Admiral Beatty, commanding the British battle cruisers encountered the weaker German equivalent.The battle was intended to destroy Reinhard Sheer's naval fleet.

    Admiral Beatty fled north pursued by German dreadnoughts. The Germans got a nasty surprise when Jellicoe's British fleet intervened which they thought was too far north to help. In a night of intense fighting the retreat of the German battle ships were covered by their lighter ships, while Jellicoe lost time after turning to avoid a potential torpedo attack.

    The Germans lost one battle cruiser, one pre dreadnought, four armoured cruisers and eight destroyers, while the British lost two battle cruisers. Jutland was the last and largest of all the great naval ship battles. Never again did battle fleets meet in such numbers. Tactically most historians agree that the Germans did better in the battle, but as the battle forced the German fleet to stay in port for the rest of the war it was a strategic victory for the Royal Navy.

The attack was preceded by an eight bombardment on the German front lines starting Saturday the 24th of June, 1916. The countries that took place in this battle were: Canada, France, Germany, and Britain. The Canadian troops were considered part of the British army. After the first day of battle there were over 58,000 British casualties. The battle is considered the most famous battle in WWI

    On 11th November the leaders of both sides held a meeting in Ferdinand Foch's railway carriage headquarters at Compiegne. The Armistice was signed at 6am and came into force five hours later. It was official. THE WAR WAS OVER.
