    Early morning of September 1st germany open fired at a polish fort which was the first combat engagement of World War II. This started the war, it was very risky of Hitler to do this because his army was not completely ready and many of his generals asked him to think about it before doing it. Hitler was certian this would be a brief war but he didnt realize what he had got himself into.

    The germans blitzkrieged the west on an early morning of may 10th. With this attack the opposing forces retreated. These were british and french troops trying to help and they retreated. Germans used air forces to attack the retreating soldiers and civilians. The germans reached the English Channel which essentially cut off the allied forces to the North.

    Britian needed to maintain North African areas, it was vital for Britain, which needed to keep access to the Suez Canal in order to remain in close contact with the rest of its empireAircraft struck the Italian naval base at Taranto, sinking a battleship and damaging two others. During the attack, the British only lost two aircraft. This led Germany to get in on the fight and let to an outbreak.

With the invasion carrying on, Russia had drafted over 1 million soviet troups. The soviet fell and 600,000 troops were captured.

    Early morning this day the japanese sent waves of aircraft to bomb Pearl Harbor which is located off an Island in Hawaii. The US was not prepared for this at all, 2400 americans were killed, five battleships had been sunk, 16 damaged, and 188 aircraft destroyed. This led the United States into the World War.

    Hitler launched a two-pronged attack, one set of troops went to Baku and the other was sent to Stalingrad. This is one of the bitterest conflicts that will take place in the 20th century. The Germans had one task and that was to take the city of Stalingrad and the west bank of the Volga. The Soviets ending up winning the Battle of Stalingrad but lost many sokdiers in this battle.

    The US cracked a code of the Japanese plan to attack american carriers so they were able to counter the attack. This battle marked the turning point of the war in the pacific. On June 4th 1942 aircraft attacked and sunk 4 japanese carriers, forcing them to withdrawal. The US cracking the code saved them many of lives and gave them time to think of a counter.
  • Normandy Invasion

    The invasion of Normandy was important because it opened a second front against the German forces. On D-Day, June 6, 1944 , General Dwight Eisenhower led U.S. and Allied troops in an invasion of Normandy. The armies fought their way through France and Belgium and into Germany while Russian troops fought from the east. On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered.

    May 8th 1945 was V-E Day, stands for Victory in Europe Day, and it marked the formal end of Hitler's war. Many people did not know how to celebrate, because nothing would ever be the same because of this war. The german forces in Italy surrended on May 2nd, which led to the ending of the way in Europe. The war was not completely over until Japanese surrended after the atomic bomb was dropped.

    Truman decided to use the newly developed atomic bomb to end the war quickly and prevent more U.S. casualties. TheUS dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, killing roughly 70,000 people and injuring 100,000 more. On August 9, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, killing another 40,000 people.
