    The Japanese attempted to take over a port in New Guinea. The U.S. wanted to prevent them from doing that. This battle was mostly fought with aircraft carriers.     The Japanese sent planes to attack Midway and the American planes set out to attack the Japanese ships. The Japanese had to refuel so it left their ships open to attack.     Guadalcanal Campaign
    America began an offensive after the Battle of Midway. The First Marine Division landed on the islands and it was the largest marine operation at that time and led to three months of hard fighting. Both sides lost 23 ships.     Battle of Saipan
    U.S. forces launched an attack on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands to gain an air base within a direct striking distance of mainland Japan. The Japanese refused to surrender.     It was an island called Saipan and was guarded by 30,000 Japanese troops. American soldiers charged the island to gain a land advantage and the Japanese soldiers fought in honor of their emperor and committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs rather than being captured.     America invaded the invaded the island of Iwo Jima to secure airstrips for American B-29 flyers. They fought at least 21,000 well trained Japanese. They spent over a month fighting the Japanese.     President Truman ordered for the uranium bomb "Little Boy" to be dropped from the Enola Gay on Hiroshima.
