  • Attack of Manchuria

    Attack of Manchuria
    Manchuria was taken over as part of Japan's conquest for expansion. Taking Manchuria gave Japan some territory on continental Asia whcih would come in handy as Japan continued to expand.
  • Nuremburg Laws

    Nuremburg Laws
    The Nuremburg Laws deprived the Jewish of their right to German citizenship, jobs and property. they also made the Jewish easier to identify by the Nazis, they had to wear a bright yellow star on their clothing.
  • Alliance with Italy and Germany

    Alliance with Italy and Germany
    Japan, Italy and Germany or the Axis Powers, became allies to help secure their individual intrests in expansion. Though they were great powers, they were defeated by the Allies at the end of the war.
  • Kristallnacht

    Kristallnacht
    A few days earlier a young Jewish man shot an employee of the German Embassy in Paris to avenge his father's deportation. When the Nazis heard of this they launched an attack on the Jewish community. They stormed Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues across Germany. Around 100 Jewish were killed, this night is now known as the "Night of Broken Glass".

    German planes invaded Polish airspace then rained bombs on the Poles. While the air attack was occuring, German tanks and troops also crossed into Polish territory. Warsaw quickly fell, leading the whole ocuntry to fall.

    Soviet Union invaded E. Poland
    After the Non-Agression Pact, the Soviet Union and Germany allowed themselves to help each other. Stalin sent troops into E. Poland to aid the German war effort.

    Once Paris fell to the Germans and Italy attacked from the south, France accepted defeat. This allowed the Germans to take over the North and make the South a puppet government.
  • Battle of Britain

    Battle of Britain
    First the German air force bombed Great Britain, then they laid off for a little while, allowing the RAF to fight back. Eventually the Germans gave up on daylight raids in favor of night attacks. On May 10, 1941 Hitler had to call off his froces because of British resistance.
  • Lend Lease Act

    Lend Lease Act
    This allowed the President of the US to lend or lease arms to countries that are vital to the United States. This led the US Navy to begin escorting British ships that were just given arms.
  • German invasion of the Soviet Union

    German invasion of the Soviet Union
    Germany attacked by blitzkreig warfare. Even though the Soviet Red Army was the biggest in the world, it was not the most well-trained army in the world. Eventually the Germans isolated Leningrad, more than 1 million people died in one winter, but the Soviets refused to fall. The Germans had no choice, but to retreat the next winter because general Zhukov attacked back and the cold winter did not work well with their summer uniforms.

    Atlantic Charter
    Roosevelt and Churchill made the Atlantic Charter to uphold free trade and the right of people to chose their own government. It acted as the Allies' peace plan.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Japan wated to attack America becasue earlier that year America had intercepted a code about their impending attack on Southeast Asia. Japan attacked Southeast Asia and America at the same time, as the American naval fleet was seen as a threat. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Hawaii early in the morning with bombs. After just 2 hours 18 ships had been damaged or sunk, 1000 Americans were injured, and 2400 Americans were killed by the Japanese attacks.
  • Japanese Internment

    Japanese Internment
    President Theodore Roosevelt began the Japanese internment with Executive Order 9066 because he was afraid that some of the Japanse living in America could be spies for Japan so he contained them all within internment camps. Even though most of the Japanese-Americans were all contained, most did not pose a thrreat as they considered themselves Americans and were loyal to America.
  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    America had intercepted another mesage from the Japanese so Japan sent a force of 150 ships towards Midway Island. The Japanese wated to not only seize Midway, but to finish off the American Pacific fleet. The Americans were greatly out numbered, but that didn't stop them from using planes to attack Japanese ships. Despite the size disadvantage the Americans still managed to defeat the Japanese.
  • Allied invasion of Italy

    Allied invasion of Italy
    The Allies invaded Sicily and managed to recapture it from the Germans. The capturing of Sicily caused Mussolini to fall, Italy eventually surrendered to the Allies. The Germans then came back and recaputered the north of Italy, putting Mussolini back in charge. Fighting continued until Germany fell and Mussolini was killed.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    D-day was the invasion of Normandy by land and sea. The British, American, French and Canadian forces fought their way up the beach aganist the German machine guns, rocket launchers and cannons.
  • German Surrender

    German Surrender
    The Third Reich made an unconditional surrender, because the allies had teamed up to fight the Germany. The Soviets managed to surround the capital and Hitler killed himself to avoid being killed by the enemy. Now without their leader Germany couldn't hold themselves together anymore.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima

    Bombing of Hiroshima
    Even though President Truman warned the Japanese, they took no action to try and stop the impending attack. This led the Americans to bomb the city of Hiroshima killing 73,000 of the 350,000 people in the city.
  • Bombing of Nagasaki

    Bombing of Nagasaki
    The bombing of Nagasaki occured just 3 days after the bombing of Hiroshima. out of the 200,000 people living in the city, 37,000 of them were killled by the single bomb. The radiation then went on to kill more as well.
  • Japanese Surrender

    Japanese Surrender
    The Japanese surrendered to the Americans aboard the US ship the Missouri. This marked the end of the war.
