During the early 1850s, extreme rolls extended out above the ears.(1st photo) Around the mid-1850s, the rolls in the hair begin to soften and transition into padded wings over the ears. (2nd photo) In 1857, the padded wing hairstyle was the height of fashion. The hair, still parted over the middle and pinned up in the back, extended over the ears in thick pads or rolls. (3rd photo)

    1860's
During the early 1860s, younger women often styled their hair in long crimps and waves. (1st photo) More conservative styles were parted in the center and pulled back with combs and wrapped in a bun. Often a braid would circle the head or hair would curl or puff out at the sides. (2nd photo) Eventually, hair nets were worn over the back of the head, and the bun was released to fall down the neck into the hairnet. (3rd photo)

Careless locks were fashionable during the early 70s. Soft tendrils fell around the face and waves and curls hung behind a large, loose topknot that was held in place with a elaborate combs. Short, frizzed bangs gained popularity in 76. The late 70s are characterized by an extreme upsweep of hair. Notice the short, frizzed bangs of the two women in the top images. The woman on the top left also has the loose topknot. The women in the bottom image sport a variety of long, more "careless" hairdos.

The more careless look of the 70s hairstyles carried over into the 1880s. The women in the images below display a variety of 1880s styles. Most have loosely piled hair, curled or frizzy bangs, and locks of hair carelessly falling from their buns.(1st & 2nd photos) As the 1880s neared an end, women began to grow out their bangs, and they often parted them in the center. 1890's
During the 1890s, women still maintained the "careless" locks hairstyles that began in the 1870s. Soft, short bangs were again popular in the 1890s, with a very small topknot and loose, short hair around the temples and cheeks. Hair was sometimes worn in a bun at the nape of the neck. (top photo) By 1896, bangs were out of fashion, and women began growing them out and flattening them down into a central part with waves around the temples. (bottom photo)
