Who discovered it?

  • Democritus's Atomic Philospphy and Dalton's Atomic Theory

Democritus's Atomic Philospphy and Dalton's Atomic Theory
Democritus introduced the concept of an atom and reasoned that atoms were indivisible and indestructible. From that concept, using experimental methods, Dalton transformed Democritus's ideas on atoms into a scientific theory.
Interesting Fact: After discovering color blindness, he discovered that he was color blind too.

  • Protons are discovered

    Protons are discovered
Eugen Goldstein, observed a cathode-ray tube and found rays traveling opposite to that of the cathode-rays. He called these rays canal rays and concluded that they were composed of positive particles, otherwise known as protons.
Interesting Fact: He discovered the proton but didn't get credited for it.

  • Electrons are discovered

    Electrons are discovered
The English physicist J.J. Thomson, discovered the electron. Thomson performed experiments that involved passing electric current through gases at low pressure. He sealed the gases in glass tubes fitted at both ends with metal disks called electrodes.
Interesting Fact:He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the electron.
  • Nucleus is discovered

    Nucleus is discovered
In 1911, Ernest Rutherford and his co-workers used the gold foil experiment to further test the models of the atomic structure. Based on his experimental results Rutherford discovered the nucleus. The Rutherford atomic model is known as the nuclear atom.
Interesting Fact: He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908
  • Titanic

    Titanic
    R.M.S. Titanic launched.
  • Orbit of an electron

    Orbit of an electron
Niels Bohr, a young physicist and student of Rutherford. Changed Rutherford's model to incorporate newer discoveries about how the energy of an atom changes when an atom absorbs light. He proposed that an electron is found only in specific circular paths or orbits, around the nucleus.
Interesting Fact: What he discovered became a basis for the quantum theory.
  • The Quantum Mechanical Model

    The Quantum Mechanical Model
Erwin Schrodinger, used Bohr's calculations and his own results to solve a mathmatical equation describing the behavior of atoms at different energy levels. His model is known as the quantum mechanical model, it determines the allowed energies an electron can have and how likely it is to find the electron in various locations around the nucleus of an atom.
Interesting fact: Princeton and Oxford Universities fought to have him as a part of their staff.

  • "No charge for you"

    "No charge for you"
The english physicist, James Chadwick. Confirmed the existence of yet another subatomic particle, the neutron. He performed a series of experiments, suggesting that new radiation consisted of uncharged particles known as neutrons.
Interesting Fact: He worked on the Manhatten Project during WWII
