    Alessandro Volta's battery is credited as one of the first electrochemical cells. It consists of two electrodes: one made of zinc, the other of copper. The electrolyte is either sulfuric acid mixed with water or a form of saltwater brine. I am thankful that electricity enables humans to do so many things such as create timelines like this one for class projects referencing the moment in history that started the wheel turning to a modern age like today.

    Alexander Graham Bell was given the first patent on the telephone. His device enabled vocal and other sounds to be transmitted telegraphically. This technological advancement has made profound impacts in our ability to communicate as a society. The flexibility of calling someone is something that I am thankful for in my life as you never know when you might need to reach someone that may live a great distance away.

    Email
    Ray Tomlinson wrote the first software allowing the sending and receiving of email on the equivalent of the modern day internet. This advancement much like the telephone allowed for people to communicate with others worldwide without concern for distance. I personally find email to be essential, it is how I communicate with a great majority of family, friends and business associates.I am thankful for the flexibility email permits me, and the rapid ability of sending/receiving new mail.

    Wireless Networks
    Being able to compute remotely is an incredible convenience. From the first cell phone invented in 1973 to the proposed development of "hot spots" in 1993, the changes in wireless technology have been positive. Devices are smaller and easier to use, while the power and scope of the remote hot spots have widened immensely. In my life I find myself very dependent on my cell phone and all of the applications and tools it has.

    Internet
    The internet was designed to support open architecture networking. It started as an academically focused tool that has evolved into a multifaceted machine that is used by an incredible number of people everyday. The internet has had profound impact in my life from taking classes and earning an associates degree, to finding employment, running a business and being able to better stay connected with family and friends.
