Werner Heisenberg & Quantum Mechanics

  • Birth

    Birth
Werner Karl Heisenberg was born December 5, 1901, Würzburg, Germany. Son of Dr. August Heisenberg, a proffesor at the University of Munich, and Annie Wecklein ¹.
  • Univeristy

    Univeristy
Heisenberg entered the University of Munich in 1920 to study physics under Arnold Sommerfeld, Wien, Pringsheim, and Rosenthal ¹. Sommerfield was renowned for his work in atomic spectroscopy and exponent of the quantum model of physics certainly influencing Heisenberg ¹.
  • Quantum Crisis

Heisenberg proposed that the current electron theory was wrong and should be based of observable properties. He used algebraic matrices and quantities such as velocity and position to correctly account for observed properties of an atom ¹. His new model introduced half-integer quantum atoms which went against Niels Bohr’s accepted theory of the time ².
  • Uncertainty Principle

Heisenberg published his theory and stated one could not know a particles position and momentum at the same time, going against the previously held belief that you could predict its exact position.
The uncertainty principle became part of the widely accepted Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics starting a paradigm shift for all physicist. Since his theory was based on observation like radiation it was refutable fulfilling Poppers falsifiability.
  • Nobel Prize

    Nobel Prize
For his revolutionary theory in Quantum mechanics that led to the discovery of allotropic forms of hydrogen Heisenberg received the Nobel prize ². He was a brilliant mind who set out to explain what was not understood.
  • Death

    Death
Werner Karl Heisenberg passed age 74 in Munich, Germany ¹.
