  • China and the Opium War

    The Chinese authorities confiscated and destroyed all opium waiting to be brought in from foreign ships during the first Opium War in 1839. The British then attacked Chinese forces in 1840, forcing the emporer to pay $6 million for the opium that had been seized and $12 million for the war.
  • Pure Food and Drug Act

    The Pure Food and Drug Act was passed regulating food and drugs that were moved in interstate commerce. It was designed to raise standards in the food and drug industries and penalized misbranding and adulteration.
  • The Harrison Act

    President Wilson approved the Harrison Act which required any person that dealt drugs covered by the act to register and pay an annual tax of $1.
  • National Prohibition

    Nebraska became the thirty-sixth and final state required to ratify the Eighteenth Amendment prohibiting the manufacture, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages.
  • Cocaine

    Congress officially defined cocaine as a narcotic and prohibited the importation of most cocaine and coca leaves
  • Uniform Drug Act

    35 states enacted the Uniform Drug Act which regulated and prohibited coca and opium products. Statutes relating to marijuana were also enacted in every state.

    Federal laws restricted the conditions under which amphetamines could be prescribed.
  • Marijuana

    Colorado and Washington legalized the use and sale of marijuana by adults, age 21 and over.
