Week 3 Assignment PHIL202 - NIELS BOHR

  • Birth of Niels Henrik David Bohr

Birth of Niels Henrik David Bohr
Born October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Period: to

    Attended Copenhagen University

While here he studied under Professor C. Christiansen, who was a well known physicist of the time. He received his Master's degreee in 1909 and his Doctor's degree in 1911.
  • Received His First Science Award

    Received His First Science Award
A competition put on by the Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen caused Bohr to delve into an experimental and theoretical investigation involving surface tension. He ended up winning the competitions and received a gold metal which was foreshadowing of his many accomplishments yet to come! His works were published in the Transactions of the Royal Society.
  • Atomic Model Breakthrough

    Atomic Model Breakthrough
After working for Professor Rutherford in 1912 at the Manchester laboratory, he began studying the structure of an atom based on the discovery of the atomic nucleus. He borrowed conceptions from Planck's Quantum theory to develop his model that is still used to this day to represent the physical and chemical composition of all known elements. Below is a link that does a pretty good job at explaining the model!

  • Appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University

  • Was made Head of Institute for Theoretical Physics

This position was created for Bohr and he held it until his death in 1962.
  • Period: to

Served as Head of Institute of Theoretical Physics

During his time as the Head of the Institute he contributed to several major scientific issues including further refining the structure of the atom, issues arising in quantum physics, and eventually went on to assist with the Atomic Energy Project.
  • Received the Nobel Prize

According to NobelPrize.org, "The Nobel Prize in Physics 1922 was awarded to Niels Henrik David Bohr "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them"(The Nobel Prize in Physics 1922, n.d.).
  • Death of Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr passed away on November 18, 1962 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
