Allies storm Northern France on D-Day
June 6, 1944 was when combined forces from Britain, America, and Canada stormed the beaches on Normandy, France in an attempt to liberate it from German forces. After careful planning and a massive battle, the Allied forces won the battle and liberated most of Northern France. -
Battle of the Bulge
Hitler wanted to split the Allied forces in Northwest Europe by launching a surprise blitzkrieg. The Allies fought back and formed a defensive line shaped like a bulge, where the battle gets its name from. The battle ended in a draw, but was overall good for the Allies since it was a failure for Hitler. -
War in Europe Ends
American forces cross the Rhine River in March 1945 and moved in towards the German Capital of Berlin. Soviet troops continue to fight their way east to Berlin against the remaining German troops, reaching it in late April 1945. Hitler commits suicide on April 30 and remaining German troops surrender on May 8, ending the war.
