The masks worn during the bubonic plague were worn primarily by the plague doctors. The masks worn consisted of an ankle-length overcoat and a bird-like beak mask, often filled with sweet or strong-smelling substances, along with gloves, boots, a wide-brimmed hat, and an outer over-clothing garment. The purpose of this mask was to protect the doctors that were helping take care of people that contracted the plague. -
During the Spanish Influenza pandemic from 1919-1920, citizens wore “muzzles” or “pig-like snout” masks. Healthcare workers created masks using gauze and other porous material which wasn’t very effective in preventing the spread of the flu. Some would even cut extra holes into their masks to breathe better or to be able to smoke while wearing a mask. It was created during the time of the influenza pandemic to protect those helping people with the disease and to help prevent the spread. -
During the covid pandemic there were various mask options to choose from such as a basic surgical mask or companies would create more stylish cotton masks so people would enjoy wearing them more. The only requirement was that a mask must cover your nose and mouth. The masks were used during covid to not only limit the spread of the coronavirus but to allow citizens to continue living a somewhat normal life while protecting themselves and others.
