His speech led to the spepreation of North and South Vietnam.

    Ngo Dinh Diem refused to partake in elections
    The Geneva Accords of July 1954 was the election that would unify Vietnam as either a Communist country or a democratic government. Diem and his supporters in the United States realized that Ho Chi Minh and the more populous north would probably win the elections Which would turn Vietnam under the Communist banner. Therefore Diem refused to hold the elections which led the separation of North and South to become permanent.

    Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which authorized President Johnson to take any measures he believed were necessary to retaliate against North Vietnam for the safety and preservation of democracy in South Vietnam.

    Operation Rolling Thunder was the first American assult on North Vietnam. It reprsented major expansion of American involvement in the Vietnam. It spakred a fire in the already raging war between North and South Vietnam.

    American Soliders led by Charlie Company, went to Son. My; a village said to be made up by the Vietcong and/or Vietcong sympathizers; to destroy the village. When they got there, the soliders found only women, children and elderly. They killed over 300 people including babies and children. Not only that, they also raped and cruelly slaughterd the women, and mutliated the elderly.

    Nixon ran for the Republican presidential nomination, but lost one of the closest elections in American history to John F. Kennedy. He also ran for goveneor of California but he lost that election too. He won the 1968 U.S. presidential election, and defeated Hubert Humphrey and Geroge Wallace. He wanted to achive "peace in honor" in regards to Vietnam.
  • Kent state students shot

    Kent state students shot
    The National gaur had been called to calm down riots at Kent state. The guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds and killed four students, wounded nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis. Some of the students who were shot had been protesting the Cambodian Campaign and other students who were shot had been walking nearby or observing the protest from a distance.

    North Vietnam took over Saigon and practically ended the war and caused the U.S to slowly withdrawal their army. The war ended with everything going back to square one and North and South Vietnam were split by the 17th parallel line.
