    Torcello mosaics in the St. Mark's Cathedral show a middle eastern influence.

    This shows their link to the Byzantine Empire and the influence that the empire had on the city. Artwork from this time period also had a strong middle eastern influence.

    The population of Venice is between 5,000 and 6,000 people.

  • Venice Founded

    Venice was founded on a group of islands by the refugees of a Lombard invasion. They wanted natural protection from invaders. This happened sometime within the 400- 500's CE
  • Pepin campaigns in Northeast Italy and makes an alliance with the Venitian Dodge.

  • Treaty established between the Byzantines and the Franks saying that Vence will not be pat of the Carolingian Empire.

  • Venice's government is transferred to the opposite bank of the city due to lower waters there.

  • St. Mark's Cathedral is built.

    St. Mark's Cathedral was built in Venice to house what are believed to be the bones of St. Mark. These were brought from Alexandria.
