  • The Panic of 1837

    The Panic of 1837
    The Panic of 1837 was the nation's worst economic depression. It was a financial crisis that had happened in the United States. Jackson's decision to stop the paper money for the purchase of federal land was what caused the panic. It lasted until the mid 1840's. Unemployment went up and prices went down.
  • The Knights of Labor

    The Knights of Labor
    Uriah Stephens founded this labor union. Stephens included all workers around the country who were skilled or unskilled in his union. The knights would recruit women and African Americans. The union functioned largely as a secret society.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    Chinese Exclusion Act
    The civil rights of Chinese immigrants that were already in the United States were limited. The act had negative consequences on the economy. The act also did not allow Chinese in the United States to visit their families in China.
  • Interstate Commerce Commission

    Interstate Commerce Commission
    The congress created this to monitor railroad shipping rates. They could only keep watch on railroads that crossed state lines. It couldn't make laws or control the railroads' transactions. This was the first federal agency to monitor business practices.
  • The Progressive Era

    The Progressive Era
    A period of widespread social activists and political reform across the United States that spanned from the 1890's and 1920's. It was to eliminate problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and political corruption. Progressives hoped to reform the political process in order to reform society. They also urged government to regulate business.
  • Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand

    Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand
    A group of Serbs who believe that Bosnia belonged to Serbia. They also killed his wife Sophie. The assassin was found to be Gavrilo Princip This was significant to U.S. history because it was the turning point that leads to World War 1 a month after the event.
  • Zimmerman Note

    Zimmerman Note
    German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman sent a telegram to Mexico. Germany was seeking help from Mexico stating that if the U.S. declared war on Germany, Mexico would declare war on the U.S. The telegram was intercepted by the British and given to the U.S. After the Wilson no longer wanted peace and declared war on Germany. This is an important part of U.S. history because this is when the U.S. entered world war 1.

    The Fourteen Points
    President Wilson laid out America's war aims and his vision for peace after war. His speech included fourteen key points upon which he believed the peace following the war must be based on.
  • The End of World War 1

    The End of World War 1
    Germany had surrendered and all nations had agreed to stop fighting while the terms of peace were negotiated. On June 28, 1919, Germany and the Allied Nations including Britain, France, Italy and Russia signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the war.The end of the war symbolized the fall of Germany and the rise of the U.S. as a world power.

    The Red Scare
    The Red Scare was a wave of widespread fear of suspected communists and radicals thought to be a plotting revolution within the U.S. This was a significant event in history because we can see how the scare that communist might spread shows how dirty the government is willing to be to protect the nation.
  • US Stock Market Crashes

    US Stock Market Crashes
    On this date, the stock market crashed. This didn't started the Great Depression specifically but it led to a chain of events that quickened the collapse of the U.S. economy. It is important to the story of the U.S. because this indirectly started the worst economy period in our country's history. Also, The Great Depression shows us what happens when the government doesn't help its people during tough times.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes president

    Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes president
    When he became president, he helped combat The Great Depression. The first thing he did was start something called "The New Deal". The importance in history is that he helped US citizens from what was going on. He didn't end it but at least he helped people continue with a stable life.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    The attack on Pearl Harbor was an attack elaborated by the Japanese. They had the idea of expansion and the US was in their way so they decided to attack. What is so important about this event is that it made the US join the war. When the US joined the war, the Allies had more support and were able to help in the effort to end the second world war.
  • The Atomic Bomb

    The Atomic Bomb
    The first test for the Atomic Bomb happened in Alamogordo, New Mexico. It was called the Manhattan Project and the results were successful. This weapon started a change in the course of history that can still be seen towards this day. It was used only once against someone and the results were catastrophic.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the first and last time someone used this type of bombs on another nation. The result was catastrophic and brought Japan to surrender. Due to this event, Japan surrendered 9 days after the bombs.
  • The Cold War

    The Cold War
    The Cold War started in 1947 through 1991. It lasted 46 years. It was called the Cold War because the two superpowers never faced each other directly in a " hot" military contact. The two superpowers were the United Sates and the Soviet Union. A total of 34 U.S. soilders died through out the entire war.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    The U.S.'s involment in the Korean war was costly. 37,000 American soldiers were killed in action. 103,000 soldiers wounded in action. 4,817 soldiers were listed as missing in action. The casualties were not the only costly part of the war. Money also went up. Before the war the U.S. only spent 13 billion dollars on defensis. After the Korean war the U.S. spent 45 billion dollars on defense.:)
  • The Montogomery Bus Boycott

    The Montogomery Bus Boycott
    On December first 1955 Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery and sat down in a empty seat. Later the bus driver requested that she give up her seat to a white passenger. In that time Mongomery law required African American passengers to give up their seats to whites. After Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat she was arrested. This started the Montogomery Movement. This was where people would refuse to ride on the bus.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, wich legally ended discrimination and segregation that had been instutalized by the Jim Crow Laws. The Civil Rights Act was important to many U.S. citizens. Martian Luther King J.R. was one of the leaders of the Civil Rights Act.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Voting Rights Act
    In 1870 the Voting Right Act was passed and African Americans were allowed to vote. President Lyndon Johnson signed the act allowing African American's the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act allowed federal government to dismantle state-level measures that made it very difficult or even imposible to deny African Americans the right to vote.
