    Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
    On April 14, 1865 five days after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, Lincoln and his wife went to Ford's Theatre in Washington, During the third act a man crept up behind Lincoln and shot the president in the back of the head. Lincoln died on April 15th It was the first time a US president had been assassinated. After the shooting, the assassin, John Wilkes Booth a 26 year old actor and Southern sympathizer leaped down from the presidential box and escaped.
  • Thomas Edison invents the lightbulb

    In 1879 50 year old Thomas Edison invents the first working lightbulb, the lightbulb using lower current electricity, a small carbonized filament, and an improved vaccum inside the globe, he was to produce a reliable long lasting source of light.
  • James garfield elected as president

    The United States presidential election of 1880 was the 24th quadrennial presidential elction, held on Tuesday, November 2, 1880. It was largely seen as a referendum on the end of Reconstruction in Southern states carried out by Republicans.
  • Massacre at Wounded Knee

    On December 28th 1890 the Seventh Cavalry, Custers old regiment rounded up about 350 starving and freezing
    Sioux and took them to a camp at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. The next day, the soldiers demanded that the Native Americans give up all their weapons. A shot was fired from which side it was not clear. The soldiers opened fire with deadly cannon. Within minutes, the Seventh Cavalry slaughtered as many as 300 mostly unarmed Native Americans, including several children.

  • Assassination of Arcduke Franze Ferdinand

    On June 28th 1914 Archduke Franze Ferdinand and his wife were shot dead by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. The assassination led straight to the First World War.
  • Gandhi becomes leader of the independence movement in India
