  • French and Indian War 1753-1764

    1. Firstt battle was at Lexington.
    2. A war between America and France.

  • Treaty of Paris

    1. The 1763 Treaty of Paris brought about the end of the French and Indian War.
    2. The treaty was signed in Paris on February 10, 1763 by representatives of Great Britain, Spain, and France.
    3. All land west of the Mississippi River was given to Britain.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    1. This was a law.
    2. This law made settlers not be able to cross the Appelaichian Mountains.
    3. This was the 1st time the colonists had hostility towards mother England.
  • Sugar Act

    1. Tax on sugar and molasses.
    2. This act did not affect many but the idea of taxes growing was an issue for the colinists.
    3. On April 5, 1764, Parliament passed a modified version of the Sugar and Molasses Act (1733), which was about to expire.
  • Stamp Act

    1. The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765.
    2. The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used.
    3. The money collected by the Stamp Act was to be used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains (10,000 troops were to be stationed on the American frontier for this purpose).
  • Qaurtering Act

    1. The Quartering Act of 1765 required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies.
    2. If the barracks were too small to house all the soldiers, then localities were to accommodate the soldiers in local inns, livery stables, ale houses, victualling houses, and the houses of sellers of wine.
    3. Should there still be soldiers without accommodation after all such publick houses were filled, the colonies were then required to take, hire and make fit for the reception

    1. A series of four acts passed by the British Parliament.
    2. The Suspending Act prohibited the New York Assembly from conducting any further business.
    3. The British American colonists named the acts after Charles Townshend, who sponsored them.

    2. Chrispus Attucks was the first man killed at the Boston Massacre.

  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    1. "Don't shoot untill you see the white of their eyes." -William Prescott
    2. British regulars faced an assemblage of independently minded colonial militia at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
    3. By evening of that day the British held the Charlestown peninsula, and a new respect for the determination and resourcefulness of colonial forces.
  • Common Sense

    1. Written my Thomas Paine
    2. Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy.
    3. The plain language that Paine used spoke to the common people of America and was the first work to openly ask for independence from Great Britain.

    1. On July 3, 1776, British troops landed on Staten Island.
    2. Over a period of six weeks, British troop strength was increased so that it number over 32,000 by the end of August.
    3. On August 22, General Howe, the British commander, began transporting troops across the bay from Staten Island to Long Island
