Hannah Simpson Grant gave birth to Hiram Grant. -
West Point
Hiram Grant was accepted into West point, where he would then have to serve 4 years in the American army. -
His time at West Point / Graduation
He finally graduated West Point. When he was first enlisted for West Point, they put his name as Ulysses S. Grant and Hiram, now Ulysses, just went with it. -
Julia Dent
While in West Point Ulysses was bunked with Frederick Dent. Ulysses fell in love with Fredericks sister, Julia Dent, he proposed and she happily accepted to proposal. -
Marriage
After four years, Julia and Ulysses finally get married. -
1st child
Ulysses and Julia's first baby boy was born, Frederick Dent Grant, named after Julia's father. -
2nd child
In Bethel, Ohio, Julia gave birth to her second son, Ulysses S. Grant II -
3rd child
Julia gave birth to her first baby girl. -
4th and final child
Julia's last baby was Jesse Root Grant II, named after Ulysses father, Jesse Root Grant. -
Poor
Ulysses could not longer provide for his large family, so he moved back to Galena, Illinois, were he worked with his two brothers at his father's leather store. -
Civil War
Ulysses re-entered a new war zone where he took part in many union victories such as: Fort Henry, Battle of Shiloh, and the Siege against Vicksburg. -
Lieutenant General
President Lincoln made Ulysses Lieutenant General (incharge of all the Union armies). -
Presidency
Ulysses was made president with no prior political experience. -
Traveling
A few years after Grant ended his presidency he and his wife started a world tour, that lasted 2 1/2 years. -
Death
After his world travel, Grant was diagnosed with throat cancer. When he was on his deathbed, Grant wrote memoirs about his time in the Civil War. He later died in New York City.
