This people did not approve fighting on television.Eventually, Davie and one of his partners, Bob Meyrowitz, had different ideas as to what marketing direction the UFC should take, leading to his departure from the promotion.

    McCain's Campaign UFC 9 was the first event that didn't have the tournament format. Senator John McCain campaigns against the sport but it ends up taking place anyway. New rules are established because of this, fighters could only hit with open fists. After the event, John McCain pulled the UFC off cable systems.

    UFC 12 UFC 12 is held, for the first time ever, two tournaments take place. One tournament for fighters under 199 pounds and another tournament for fighters over 200 pounds. Vitor Belfort makes his UFC debut and wins the tournament for the heavyweights. Joe Rogan makes his UFC debut as a backstage announcer and the first heavyweight title fight takes place between Dan Severn and Mark Coleman. Coleman wins the UFC heavyweight champion.

    UFC 13 features the debut of both Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz. Randy wins the heavyweight tournament while Tito loses in the finals of the lightweight tournament against Guy Mezger.
  • Padded Gloves

    Padded gloves are needed for the first time at UFC 14.
  • UFC 15

    At UFC 15, some rules change. Fighters have limitations as to where they can hit their opponent and hair pulling is no longer acceptable. Vitor Belfort and Randy Couture fight for the first time, Randy wins the fight.
  • UFC: Japan

    The UFC travels to Japan for UFC: Japan. Mike Goldberg makes his UFC debut and Frank Shamrock become the first ever UFC middleweight champion.
  • UFC 16

    UFC 16 features the first ever lightweight tournament for fighters under 170 pounds. Pat Miletich makes his UFC debut and wins the lightweight tournament.
  • UFC 17

    UFC 17 is the last event in a while to feature the tournament format. Carlos Newton, Dan Henderson, and Chuck Liddell all make their UFC debut. Henderson wins the middleweight tournament against Newton in the finals.
  • UFC: Brazil

    The UFC travel to Brazil for UFC: Brazil. Pedro Rizzo and Wanderlei Silva make their debut. Silva gets brutally knocked out by Vitor Belfort. This event also featured the first ever lightweight title fight.
  • UFC 19

    Kevin Randleman makes his UFC debut at UFC 19. Tito Ortiz flips off the lion's den after beating Guy Mezger, this started the intense rivalry between Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz.
  • UFC 21

    UFC 21 is presented, the 10 point scoring system used in boxing is established in MMA. Time limits change again, this time undercard fights are two five-minute rounds, maincard fights are three five-minute rounds and title fights are five five-minute rounds.
  • UFC 22

    UFC 22 featured what many consider to be the best fight in UFC history, Tito Ortiz vs Frank Shamrock for the UFC middleweight title. Matt Hughes and Jens Pulver both make their debuts. This event is also the last time Frank Shamrock appears in the UFC despite his win over Ortiz. The UFC middleweight title is vacated because of it.

    Controversy surrounds the heavyweight title fight against Kevin Randleman and Pedro Rizzo at UFC 24. Randleman slips and hits his head in his locker room before the fight. The fight does not take place and is moved to UFC 26.
  • UFC 25

    After the retirement of Frank Shamrock with the UFC, Tito Ortiz battles Wanderlei Silva for the vacated middleweight title at UFC 25. Ortiz wins and goes on to be one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.
  • UFC 26

    UFC 26 featured the rematch between Kevin Randleman and Pedro Rizzo for the heavyweight title. Kevin Randleman becomes the new UFC heavyweight champion. A bantamweight division is created for fighters under 155 pounds.
  • UFC 27

    UFC 27 features the return of Dan Severn who loses to Pedro Rizzo in a heavyweight bout.
  • UFC 28

    UFC 28 is sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. New weight classes are added, Randy Couture makes his return and beats Kevin Randleman to become UFC heavyweight champion for a second time. Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett and Babalu all make their UFC debuts.
  • UFC 29

    UFC 29 is held in Japan, it's also the last event that was held there. Matt Lindland makes his debut while Matt Hughes taps out to Denis Hallman in 21 seconds.
