It ended when the Hayes Tilden Deal was passed, which appointed Rutherford Hayes president over Samuel Tilden, took all federal troops out of the South, supported a bill that would allow for the southern transcontinental railroad, and made a white man the Postmaster General.

    The Industrial Revolution was a time of great technological progress in the United States. It began when the Erie Canal was built in 1825, and ended sometime in the early 1900s. Many items, such as the assembly line, the cottin gin, and the steam engine were invented during this time.

    The Spanish-American War was a war between Spain and America over territories in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. One of the main reasons this conflict turned into a full out war was the sinking of the Maine. The Maine was an American battleship that mysteriously sunk in a Cuban harbor. Although it was a gas leak that set off the explosion, Yellow Journalism made the explosion seem like it was caused by a Spanish mine.

    This is when the United States acquired Hawaii. The Newlands Resolution, which was the paper that made Hawaii a U.S. territory, was not ratified by the Constitution. Many native Hawaiians were opposed to this resolution.

    Imperialism: Creation of the Panama Canal
    The Panama Canal was a canal started by the French and finished by the United States. This canal went through Panama and linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This canal made water travel from the eastern coast of America to the west coast much easier, as people no longer had to go all the way around the bottom of South America.

    America enters WWI
    On April 6, 1917, America entered World War 1. There were many reasons for this, and one of them was because of the sinking of the British ship Lusitania, which had many Americans on the ship. The biggest reason, however, was the Zimmerman Note. This was a message sent from Germany to Mexico asking Mexico to fight America so that America could not enter the war. Germany promised Mexico support in the war and that Mexico could reclaim the land that they lost int he Mexican-American War.

    WW1 ended on June 28, 1919. It ended when Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, which was a peace treaty ending the violence. Many people, however, were opposed to this treaty as it stated that the cause for the violence was all Germany's fault, when it was not.

    Prohibition was the time in the U.S. whenalcohol was prohibited. Many people still were able to find beer, however. The 1920s were called the Roaring 20s because of the great economic prosperity and because jazz was becoming popular.

    In October of 1929, the Stock Market officially crashed. This sent the country into a time of great economic distress. President FDR started the New Deal program, which gave jobs to many people in the country building bridges, fixing roads, etc.

    WW2 started when Germany attacked Poland on September 1, 1939. America became involved on December 8, 1941, when America declared war on Japan. The next event shows why America declared war on Japan. The war ended when America dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Ths forced the Japanese to surrender.

    Pearl Harbor
    America joined WW2 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was a navy base in Hawaii. Japan bombed it on December 7,1941, and America entered the war on December 8, 1941.

    The Cold War was a time of high tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Space Race between America and the Soviet Union took place during this time.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War was a war between South Korea and its allies, which included the United States, and North Korea and its allies, which included China and the Soviet Union. This war was because of how Korea was controlled by Japan in WW2, so when the war was over, Korea split into two sides. North Korea was communist, and South Korea was not, so this caused conflict.

    The Vietnam War was a war between communist North Vietnam and its communist allies, and South Vietnam and its anti-communism allies. America was a very large ally to South Vietnam, and sent many troops to Vietnam. American involvement in the war ended on August 15, 1973, and North Vietnam captured Saigon and won the war soon after.

    The Gulf War was a war between the United Nations, led by the United States, against Iraq. This war was caused because of Iraq's invasion into Kuwait. Iraq was intending to capture Kuwait's oil fields, and when Iraq was leaving Kuwait, they burned the oil fields because they could not have them.

    On 9/11/01, four airplanes were hijacked by terrorists. Two of these planes were flown into the twin towers. One of them was flown into the Pentagon. The last plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania when the passengers on board fought back against the terorrists. This is a day all Americans will never forget.
