  • WWI Ends

    WWI Ends
    The 11th of November, 1918 is the exact date the guns stopped firing, and with that the war was over. The Germans agreed to sign the Treaty of Versailles making the war come to an end.

    The Treaty of Versailles was created so that Germany would have punishment for WWI. It was made to keep world peace, thus preventing Germany from beginning any more war.

    The Jazz age became extremely popular and loved be many in the 1920s. There are many different types of Jazz, varying from blues to swing. A fashion that became popular among women in that era was the ‘Flapper’.

    The television was not invented by one sole –person, but many people over a long period of time. Paul Nipkow was the first person to realise and talk about this invention. On March 25th, 1925 a man announced to the public that television were officially out.

    On January 26th, 1938 a group of important indigenous people met in Sydney to request and protest equality between the Aboriginals and Europeans. It was a difficult time for the indigenous people and a lot of racism was involved.

    WWII began on September 1st, 1939, because Germany declared war on Poland. After Poland was attacked, other countries felt as though they needed to act upon it due to alliances. Soon the Second World War began.

    On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. The sent a large Japanese air raid, and after only two hours, 2,400 American civilians were dead.

    On February 19th, 1942 the coastline of Darwin was bombed by the Japanese army. This was the first time Australia had been attacked. During this attack 243 citizens were killed.

    On August 6th, 1945 the United States created a very powerful bomb, known as the Atomic Bomb, and dropped it on the city of Hiroshima, in Japan. The bomb completely demolished the city, taking more than 10,000 innocent lives.

    On the 10th of December, 1948, an important assembly was held at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. This was held by all the United Nations Generals. There were 30 important articles that were written about human rights and treaties. The devastation of WWII caused these decisions to be made.

    The Melbourne Olympics was the first Olympics to ever be held in Australia. Many people were unsure about the location due to its being held in winter.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was seen as an “about to be” nuclear war. A man spotted the nuclear missiles being made on the island of Cuba. United States then made a deal with the people making these deadly weapons by giving them an ultimatum. This ultimatum stated that if they refused to stop making them, USA would invade their island.

    On the 28th of August, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC. This speech is extremely famous as it has been the most moving and motivational speeches of all time, expressing freedom for the African American community.
